I am indebted to Hans Haacke, who has made some searing, inspirational work over the decades.  Nevertheless, when I encountered his “Tiffany Cares” piece at the Whitney ISP show “Creative Destruction” recently, I found its deployment of irony not quite up to the task of countering Tiffany’s “Are the Rich a Menace?” apologia adequately.

As video-blogger (and exceptional Marxist pedagogue) Brendan Cooney has pointed out, the social movements that exist today, 33 years after Haacke made “Tiffany Cares,” wouldn’t do a much better job either.  I decided to substitute Haacke’s sly text for some of Cooney’s analysis of why Mitt Romney, many in the Occupy movement, the CEO of Tiffany’s and Haacke are missing a crucial part of what takes place under capitalism.   True it’s not as pithy as the original, but sometimes you just have to stare a bit longer to “get it.”
